Background of the study
Twitter political hashtags in Nigeria have become powerful instruments of semantic change. These hashtags encapsulate complex political and cultural narratives in a few words, often leading to rapid shifts in meaning. As users adopt and adapt these hashtags, new semantic associations are formed that reflect evolving public sentiments and socio-political climates (Ibrahim, 2024). This study examines how political hashtags facilitate online semantic shifts by condensing and transforming language to suit digital activism. The dynamic nature of Twitter allows for the swift dissemination of these semantic innovations, which then influence broader public discourse and everyday language. Nigerian political hashtags not only mobilize support but also redefine key concepts through creative wordplay and contextual reinterpretation. By focusing on selected political hashtags, the research investigates the mechanisms behind semantic change and explores how digital communication reshapes meaning (Okeke, 2023). This analysis contributes to a comprehensive understanding of the interplay between language and politics in digital environments.
Statement of the problem
Although political hashtags are central to online activism in Nigeria, there is limited research on how they drive semantic shifts in digital communication. Most studies focus on the political impact rather than the linguistic transformations that occur. This lack of analysis hinders our ability to understand the broader implications of semantic change in digital discourse. The study seeks to address this gap by examining the semantic evolution associated with Twitter political hashtags, providing insights into digital language change (Chukwu, 2024).
