Background of the study
Twitter political hashtags in Nigeria have become powerful instruments of semantic change. These hashtags encapsulate complex political and cultural narratives in a few words, often leading to rapid shifts in meaning. As users adopt and adapt these hashtags, new semantic associations are formed that reflect evolving public sentiments and socio-political climates (Ibrahim, 2024). This study examines how political hashtags facilitate online semantic shifts by condensing and transforming language to suit digital activism. The dynamic nature of Twitter allows for the swift dissemination of these semantic innovations, which then influence broader public discourse and everyday language. Nigerian political hashtags not only mobilize support but also redefine key concepts through creative wordplay and contextual reinterpretation. By focusing on selected political hashtags, the research investigates the mechanisms behind semantic change and explores how digital communication reshapes meaning (Okeke, 2023). This analysis contributes to a comprehensive understanding of the interplay between language and politics in digital environments.

Statement of the problem
Although political hashtags are central to online activism in Nigeria, there is limited research on how they drive semantic shifts in digital communication. Most studies focus on the political impact rather than the linguistic transformations that occur. This lack of analysis hinders our ability to understand the broader implications of semantic change in digital discourse. The study seeks to address this gap by examining the semantic evolution associated with Twitter political hashtags, providing insights into digital language change (Chukwu, 2024).

Objectives of the study

  1. To analyze semantic shifts associated with Nigerian political hashtags on Twitter.
  2. To identify patterns of meaning transformation in digital political discourse.
  3. To assess the broader impact of these semantic shifts on online language use.

Research questions

  1. How do political hashtags facilitate semantic shifts in Nigerian Twitter discourse?
  2. What patterns of meaning transformation are evident?
  3. What are the broader implications of these shifts for digital communication?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it examines how political hashtags drive semantic change in Nigerian digital communication, providing important insights for linguists and political analysts alike (Ibrahim, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study
The study focuses solely on Twitter and selected political hashtags in Nigerian digital discourse, excluding other platforms or non-political contexts.

Definitions of terms

  • Semantic Shift: A change in the meaning of a word or phrase over time.
  • Political Hashtag: A hashtag used to mobilize or discuss political issues.
  • Digital Communication: The exchange of information via online platforms.
